For some reason I've been talking a lot about the movie, 10 Things I Hate About You, Which is weird because I never jumped on that teen bandwagon and to be completely honest with you I thought the show, which you have never heard about, was much better. But the scene the movie is known for is the moment when Julia Stiles character gives her "10 things I hate about you speech". It goes something like, "I hate the way you have curly hair, blah, blah, blah."
Whenever I quote this movie it's around my sister by chance and best friend by choice. Happy Birthday, darling! Here are 28 things I love about you:
one. I love the way smile when you talk about our family
two. I love the way you love the Midnight in Paris soundtrack, but you haven't purchased it. (Go check your iTunes Playlists.)
three. I love how you have traveled the world, but you are so humble about it. It is something that changed your life and it takes someone special to hear about it.
four. I love that you are my BFF
five. I love that you play chicken with me
six. I love the awkward Walmart games you play
seven. I love that your style is fantastic and yet you don't have a style blog because you don't want that attention
eight. I love your blog! Seriously, check it out: http://www.daydreamcatcher.wordpress.com
nine. I love that you get excited to see our plants growing
ten. I love that you love sandwiches
eleven. I love that you love adventures
twelve. I love that you listen with sincerity
thirteen. I love that you care! You care so much and I love it (growl noise)
fourteen. I love that you take old things and mix them with new things
fifteen. I love that you could spend your life doing things for you, but you choose to help others
sixteen. I love the way you smile when you talk about the world
seventeen. I love your pins, girl
eighteen. I love when you say something funny and you laugh at it because you know that it really was that funny
nineteen. I love your laugh

Little Affers
I am having one of those "perfect" days. I don't mean the type of day where everything falls right into place, I mean today is one of those days where I want everyone, including myself to be perfect. Tonight I had a plan. After my night jog I was going to write my affirmations. Basically affirmations are goals I have for myself for the next 21 days. You write 10 sentences you would like to improve on your life. You write it in a positive connotation. Example: "I love waking up at 6:30 every morning." It is basically a self-improvement concept that actually works. They say if you do something for 21 days it becomes a habit. You repeat your 10 affirmation sentences, while visualizing them, 3 times a day: morning (right when you wake up), afternoon, and night time (right before you sleep). During the 21 days you repeat these affirmations (I call them "little affers" for short) so much that you start to believe them and you end up working towards your new goals.
I returned from my jog, I stretched, and then I talked to my little sister. She was crying and I wanted to console her. She told me she just needed to cry and I told her I wanted her to be happy. She told me she was happy. I realized that sometimes my need for others and myself to improve hides the truth of the matter, that we are not perfect. I am not perfect. I don't need to be perfect. She doesn't need to be perfect. It is human to cry and to let emotions get the best of you.
I used to think crying meant you were weak, crying means you are experiencing life.
So here it is folks! Life happens. You don't have to be perfect! It's important to improve, but don't be too hard on yourself. If you are enjoying the moment you are in then you are happy! If you are not happy right now, then change it!
Love Love Love,
Krystal Dey
P.S. Affirmations do not equal perfection, they equal improvement! Tears do not equal sadness, they equal life!

Create
A year ago I went on a student government retreat. At that time I was excited about the future, I had my year planned out. At the retreat we wrote letters to ourselves. I just read my letter again. This time I am reading it with new eyes. I just graduated. I am no longer a student at Utah Valley University. I am not the Service Council President. I am not a member of the Philanthropy Council. I am not a member of UVUSA. I am not the producer for the basketball games. Today I am Krystal. My letter closes with,
I have no idea what is in store for me. I don't know what is next. A year from now I could be living in a different state. I could be living in my same city. I could be working 15-hours a day. I could be working 8-hours a day. I could be living on the beach. I don't know. And I'm okay with it. I am okay with the unknown. I get to create my future. And so do you. You are what you create. Stop being a consumer and start being a creator.
Love Love Love,
Krystal Dey
P.S. Cheers to the unknown!
"Most importantly, Krystal, stay true to who you are. 'We've all got a song, we were put here to sing.'
I hope you are opening this (letter) with confidence and love for yourself, school, and service. Stay strong. You can do anything you set your mind to.
Love always,
Krystal Dey
P.S. Now go change the world! I am proud of you."

Hey Don't Call Me a Ho; Sing it at the Top of Your Lungs
"Ho Hey" from The Lumineers is rocking my "Aprilistic" playlist today. It is the song of my week and quite possibly the band of my April.
In my head I have been putting together a "Summer Concert Series" to contribute to the summer love of my life...concerts. Some are free, some cost $40, but are completely worth it (cough cough Bon Iver, you know who you are). It will be like Utah's own Coachella. Unfortunately, the lively Lumineers are not coming to Utah! That does not stop me from prancing around my apartment like the hipster gal in the band or the hipster boy wearing the fedora.
Love Love Love,
Krystal Dey
P.S. I am practicing prancing because Karli and I are starting a hipster folk band in the summer. We will play on our balcony, wear red lipstick, I'll play the harmonica and guitar, she will lead vocals and guitar! We have yet to come up with a name. Suggestions are more welcome!

Popcorn Blossoms
By definition, today I am the older gentlemen who reads a book, wears the dark grey suit with a matching hat, he sits on a chair and smiles at strangers as he asks them what floor they need to go to. He ushers them in mentioning the weather, swipes his card and pushes a button, he steps out of the elevator and watches the doors close. He sits on his char, opens his book and waits for the next stranger who needs him!
Today I am "elevator girl"!
The thing is I get to experience the person. Some drink their coffee and focus on their iPhones others smile and ask me what my name is. I like people!
People are a species of their own. Some are interactive, they make you feel important for two minutes as they ride up the elevator. Some people want to be important. I used to be afraid of the people who never show their teeth, you know the ones, they hide from your eyes, as if you aren't there. They're so afraid that if we lock eyes I might start singing or worse I might say hello. The thing is, they can't hide from me! I will find them and I will at least say hi! I will bless their sneezes and I will talk about how much I love the popcorn popping on every tree outside followed by the story of my youth and how I thought it really was popcorn!
I hope people think it's nice to know if I see you I'll ask you random questions or if you're lucky I'll compliment your watch or your shoes because I think they're cute!
I'll do this not to annoy you, but to interact with you! It's what I was taught and it has taken me 23 years to embrace it.
I learned it this from my dad. He talks to everyone. It doesn't matter who you are. You could be a Golden Globe winner or a farmer from the south, no matter what he will still talk to you because you are worth it!
Along time ago I used to rely on others to talk to me and then one day decided I could't wait around!
Love love love,
Krystal Dey
P.S. Next time your in an elevator say hello!

Song Sunday
City and Colour "The Girl"
While I'm off chasing my own dreams,
Sailing around the world,
Please know that I'm yours to keep,
My Beautiful Girl.
When you cry a piece of my heart dies,
Knowing that I may have been the cause.
If you were to leave,
Fulfill someone else's dreams,
I think I might be totally lost.
While I'm off chasing my own dreams,
Sailing around the world,
Please know that I'm yours to keep,
My Beautiful Girl.
When you cry a piece of my heart dies,
Knowing that I may have been the cause.
If you were to leave,
Fulfill someone else's dreams,

Put up a Parking Lot
I drove to school 45-minutes early today. I was late to a meeting so I took to the paid parking lot. I had 15-minutes! I ran. I met. I left. I didn't have to pay. I headed to student parking. I waited. I cleaned my dashboard. I made some phone calls. It was ten to the hour, students were coming. I was ready. I missed one spot. I missed another spot. There were 20 people trying to park at that very moment. I drove around. I wasn't in my game. Usually I stalk, I prowl, I fight! Not today. I missed every single spot. I knew if I drove to the faraway lot I could be in class already.
I drove around a few more times. I notice this girl driving a little blue truck. I have passed her over and over because she has just stayed in the one spot. She hasn't moved. I leave. I park in the faraway lot. I am okay with this because I planned on listening to my new playlist, I am wearing my pleather jacket and I will feel like I own the world if I listen to my new tunes as I walk to class.
I park. I remember my headphones are plugged into my other iPod I went running with last night. Suck!
I walk. The sun is out. I am 25-minutes late to class. The birds chirp. I make it to the parking lot I was in before. I see the girl in the little blue truck in the same place. I walk past the prime parking spot. I see a familiar face. He is leaving "the" spot. That is my dream spot. I tell him I wanted to park there. He asks if I want to go get my car. I tell him no. As I walk away I point to the little blue truck and I tell him to give it to her, she's been waiting a long time!
